P5160 Friction Loss in Pipes and Fittings

Cussons P5160 Friction Loss in Pipes apparatus allows the student to study flow through pipes and fittings, investigate the relationship between flow and pressure drop and plot values of friction factor against Reynolds number.

EXPERIMENTAL CAPABILITIES
P5160 Friction Loss in Pipes
  • Flow through smooth pipes of differing diameters under laminar and turbulent flow conditions with logarithmic plot of friction factor f against Reynolds number (Stanton diagram).
  • Flow through roughened pipes of different diameters under laminar and turbulent flow conditions with logarithmic plot of friction factor f against Reynolds number (Nikuradse diagram).
  • Investigations of the flow/pressure drop relationship for an annular pipe, using the concept of equivalent hydraulic diameter.
  • Investigation of pressure drops across various fittings enabling the results to be used to predict resistance coefficients or equivalent lengths.
Venturi meter
  • Investigation of various methods of flow measurement including variable area meter (Rotameter), Transparent Venturi Meter, Orifice Plate Meter and Pitot Static Tube
  • Comparison of pressure drops across three different types of valve (i.e. ball valve, gate valve and seat valve) under different conditions of valve opening.

P7665 BOILER CONTROL DEMONSTRATION AND FAULT SIMULATOR UNIT

The Cussons P7665 and P7667 Boiler Control Trainer allow the student to investigate the operation of a steam generation plant and observe a range of boiler control sequences relating to oil or gas fired boilers.

EXPERIMENTAL CAPABILITY
  • Designed to provide demonstration and investigation of:
  • Automatic operational functioning of an oil/gas fired boiler
  • Predetermined faults imposed on the system
  • Safety control operation
  • Feedwater pump control by various methods
  • Basic boiler mounted indicating and control systems
To study the conditions which arise when various combinations of 13 faults are imposed on the Demonstration Unit make it a powerful diagnostic tool in the understanding of boiler fault conditions.

P2776 Energy of Flywheel

Cussons P2776 Energy of Flywheel apparatus is an extremely robust and versatile unit comprising of the main flywheel, the mass of which can be varied by adding and removing two rings and one disc, and mounted on a heavy duty stand suitable for mounting.

P2776 Energy of Flywheel

EXPERIMENTAL CAPABILITIES
  • Experiments can be performed to determine:
  • The maximum (final) velocity of the descending mass
  • The maximum energy content of the flywheel
  • The energy stored when rotating at unit speed (1 rev/min)
  • The moment of inertia of the flywheel
  • The radius of gyration of the flywheel

P6233 Impact of Jets

Cussons P6233 Impact of Jets apparatus enables experiments to be carried out on the reaction of a jet of water on vanes of various forms. The apparatus is supported on a PVC base into which a vertical water supply pipe is fitted.

EXPERIMENTAL CAPABILITIES
  • Determination of the reaction of a jet #striking a fixed flat vane, mounted normal to the jet direction, at different jet diameters and flow rates.
  • As above but for a cone shaped target equivalent to an angled target plate.
  • As above but for a #hemispherical target.

P6234, P6235, P6236, P6237 Stability and Metacentric Heights.

Engineers involved in #fluids should have an understanding of #stability and #metacentric heights. Cussons vessels provide experiments to study this subject. Further stability work can be undertaken with Cussons Educational #Hydrodynamic Range.
Stability and Metacentric Heights
  • #Calibration of #HydraulicBench pressure gauge.
  • #Calibration of other #pressuregauges of similar rating to the Bench pressure gauge.
#Cussons P6235 Flat Bottomed Vessel is constructed from non-ferrous materials and has a detachable bridge piece and loading system. The bridge piece can be used with other hull sections so that #floatation characteristics may be directly compared.
  • Experiment to illustrate the #floatation characteristics of a flat bottomed vessel (#pontoon).
  • Determination of the #Metacentric Height for a flat bottomed vessel.
FLAT BOTTOMED VESSEL
Two further types of hull section are supplied to be used in conjunction with the bridge piece, keel and mast weights etc. supplied on P6235 "Floatation characteristics of a Flat Bottomed Vessel". Both additional hulls are made from non-ferrous material and one is representative of a typical hull section whilst the other is of semi-circular form.

Cussons P6237 Centre of Pressure Apparatus consists essentially of a #toroidal quadrant pivoted on its centre line on a balance arm above a water tank. The fabricated toroidal quadrant, which has dimensions of 100 mm internal radius, 200 mm outer radius and 75 mm width
  • Measurement of the #staticthrust on a vertical water submerged surface.
  • Determination of the #CentreofPressure of a vertical water submerged surface.
